This document is about a person named Herodotus and what he saw while recording what he saw about the Persians and Egyptians. he noticed that their God's are different and that they worship them in different ways. he goes into detail about their rituals of sacrifices to the Gods.

The beginning of the chapter begins with the question "Is thew United States the new Roman Empire?" This implies that  the U.S. can be compared to the Roman Empire. with that thought going through our heads the beginning of the chapter goes on to tell of more of what an empire is and different well known empires.  An empire is a political system made up of states, that are usually aggressive and conquer other territories to become bigger and extract resources. some well known empires are the Persian, Greek, China, and India. while these were all great and prosperous empires they all had the same problem would they force their culture among those they capture?, how would they attain the resources needed? would it be by taxing? or labor? and also there's the inevitable fact they sooner or later they will fall.

the rise of the first civilizations was a good and bad. There were many advancements in agriculture but with that came the destruction of land. Due to the population rising there needed to be a surplus of land for agriculture, so with that came deforestation. some of the first civilized societies Mesopotamia and Egypt. Egypt was home of the Pharaohs and their great pyramids. also around the same time there was another civilization coming up. this civilization was called Norte Chico. This civilization was different than those of the regular Mesopotamian civilizations because their cities were smaller and they showed less evidence of economic specialization. Unlike the civilizations in Mesopotamia this civilization didn't develop writing. 

In this chapter early Homo sapiens started to domesticate animals and plants which had a lot of positive effects on their ways of living. Due to the domestication of plants they no longer had to migrate and they could settle and make small villages. This was also the beginning of domesticating animals which would changes the way the live in big ways. By them planting crops they had a larger surplus of food for the community.

Ch1. Sections: Out of Africa & The Ways We Were In the Paleolithic Era we evolved as homo sapiens and we formed small bands of about 20  to 50 people. We used basic stone tools at this time too. Migration occurred and we started to move out of Africa into other continents, eventually we would migrate to every continent except Antarctica.
